A free KS5 lesson for Ramadan 2026

A lesson looking at the religious tradition and observance of Ramadan for Muslims across the globe

Ramadan is one of the most significant religious traditions in Islam, observed by Muslims around the world during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This free KS5 lesson offers students a thoughtful and informative introduction to Ramadan and its meaning, helping to build cultural understanding and empathy in your classroom.

The lesson explores how Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset throughout the month, abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking and physical intimacy — and how the time of year Ramadan falls can affect the experience of fasting differently from year to year. Students will also learn about Zakat, the tradition of charitable giving that sits at the heart of Ramadan, and how fasting as a spiritual practice appears across many of the world’s religions as a means of reflection, repentance and developing compassion for others.

This lesson is a valuable addition to any PSHE or RE curriculum, encouraging students to engage with diverse perspectives and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
