A Lesson on Free Speech, Tolerance, and Finding Common Ground

Learning to Disagree Respectfully

This lesson responds to recent acts of political violence in America, where people have been targeted for their ideas and opinions. It highlights the importance of freedom of speech as the foundation for listening to and understanding one another. Disagreement is a natural part of life, but it must be approached with tolerance and respect, always seeking common ground. While hate speech is unacceptable and unlawful, open discussion is essential for building understanding and cooperation.

Although inspired by the killing of Charlie Kirk and the polarised reactions it sparked, the lesson avoids focusing on him specifically. Instead, it uses this event as one example of many, encouraging thoughtful conversations about freedom of speech, respectful disagreement, and the importance of fostering dialogue rather than division.
